ZIRKON® DIS Total Sensor Cleaning Procedure
This article explains how to clean a ZIRKON® DIS Total sensor (and equivalent ZIRKON® ONE TCL / BIOCIDES membrane-type sensors) using a glass fiber pen. The procedure follows the official cleaning video.
Correct cleaning of the measuring membrane helps maintain stable readings and reliable sensor performance. This method is not used for standard ZIRKON® DIS (free-chlorine) electrodes—see DIS sensor cleaning articles for that sensor type.

Sensor identification
Use this reference image to identify the sensor tip, measuring membrane, and cleaning area before starting maintenance. Clean only the membrane on the bottom of the sensor—not the white adhesive ring.
Required tools
- Glass fiber pen
- Clean water
- Lint-free tissue or soft paper towel
Important note
White adhesive / sealing ring: A white adhesive or sealing ring is visible around the edge of the membrane. This is normal and part of the sensor construction. Do not remove, scrape, or damage it while cleaning. The video shows this ring in detail—keep the pen on the membrane surface only.
A clean membrane should show a uniform color with the white ring intact. Replace the sensor if the membrane is scratched, torn, or discolored unevenly after cleaning.
Cleaning procedure
- Remove the sensor from the assembly and disconnect the cable.
- Rinse off loose contamination with clean water.
- Take the glass fiber pen and move it in a circular motion over the measuring membrane on the bottom of the sensor to remove contaminants (as shown in the video).
- Use gentle pressure only and clean evenly across the membrane. Pay attention to the white glue around the edge and avoid damaging it.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove glass fiber particles.
- Dry with a lint-free tissue and reinstall the sensor.
Do not apply glass fiber pen cleaning to standard ZIRKON® DIS metal band electrodes. DIS and DIS Total / TCL cleaning procedures are different by design.

After reinstallation
After reinstallation, the sensor must repolarize. During this phase, readings may be unstable.
- Allow up to 5 minutes for stabilization (longer stabilization may apply in some installations—follow on-screen behavior and your instrument manual).
- Calibrate only after the measured value has stabilized.
For DIS Total calibration, use your reference method (for example DPD) per Menu > Cal > Cal DIS on legacy Multi instruments or the equivalent calibration workflow on NEON® ONE / KRYPTON® ONE.
